The Flu Game.

Game 5 of the 1997 Finals. A flu-stricken Michael Jordan wills his team to a win against the Jazz. They would go on to win game 6 and the Championship, and then the following year to complete their second three-peat. One of many iconic images from the win.

Initially beginning as a commissioned piece from a friend, these drawings gave me the opportunity to experiment with a few new graphite techniques, and work toward a full bleed image. Using graphite powder, brushes and a kneadable rubber I was able to create the out of focus background and some depth and separation from the subjects, adjusting some elements for balance. With Scottie Pippen and Jordan I really tried to push myself and make the players, their uniform and shoes as detailed as possible, whilst keeping a nice softness to the fabric and skin, causing their name and numbers to really pop.

A great project, which since has launched me into creating a Capsule based around the theme of Basketball. Exploring some ideas during the NBA Finals last year, the works include artworks of players, jerseys and apparel, basketballs and sneakers. Hopefully releasing in Q2, the Capsule will also include this Original and some Limited Edition Giclée Prints of the piece.
